In an era shaped by the proliferation of images across material and technological environments, images no longer function primarily as stable representations but as mediators of experience, authority, and meaning. Rooted in the Latin pictus(“depicted”), pictoriality has always been entangled with material and cultural conditions, and today extends beyond visual art into broader social frameworks that shape memory, evidence, and belief.

Between Image and Index explores this reconfigured condition through practices foregrounding traces, material contact, and spatial situations. Bringing together 33 artists and artist groups from Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen, Frankfurt am Main, Berlin, Lisbon, Kraków, and Katowice, the exhibition unfolds across HKBU’s Koo Ming Kown Exhibition Gallery, AVA Gallery, and Art Basel’s main hall as a distributed spatial constellation where meaning emerges through encounter, movement, and embodied experience.

The Braubach creek is only one case of how in order for the present moment to hold its shape and gain stability certain things are required to be hidden, disappearing, or almost imperceptible. Take a look around and you will find traces of the river partially reflected in the artworks you will come across: Things that have lost their former use trying to find a new shape for themselves, the acts of remembering, repairing and mending as survival strategies. Images of that which we tend to keep hidden below our surfaces, things in the process of disappearing or, on the contrary, things usually imperceptible briefly shining through: Concealed knowledge, hidden forces, inner worlds and fantasies veiled from our eyes in our ordinary everyday.

This exhibition delves into the essence of water

—an element celebrated for its fluidity, adaptability, and capacity to traverse boundaries, both geographical and temporal. Throughout history, water has symbolized flexibility and containment in East Asia, and today, in an era defined by rapid change, it embodies the crucial ability to adapt and coexist with instability.

There is a limitless world beneath materiality. When we turn our gaze inward and seek beyond what is visible, we discover a world beyond material possessions, beyond formalism, and, hopefully, a path to freeing ourselves from the ego.

MetallinkArt was created during the lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic in China.

Its prototype was an abandoned train station of Heaven Village located between Shenzhen and Dongguan, China. Consisting of 11 exhibition spaces and 34 studios, this digital neighborhood was created in 2021, providing an alternative platform for creators and trans-disciplinary cultural workers to continue their creative activities even under lockdown restrictions. MetalinkArt has a special focus on exploring the functional digital twins of creative spaces, enhancing the function of the physical realm by applying technological methodology.
